Stanhope-Elmore Names New Head Football Coach

Millbrook, AL – After a month of speculation, the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs have a new head football coach.

The Elmore County School Board officially approved the hiring of veteran head coach Mike Dean during a special called meeting Tuesday in Wetumpka.

This will be Dean’s 7th career head coaching stop.  He has previously served as head coach at Mary Montgomery, Charles Henderson, Valley, McGill-Toolen and Dadeville.

Dean replaces long time Mustangs head coach Jeff Foshee who resigned unexpectedly in early June.  Foshee sited burnout and health concerns as reasons for stepping down from the position he had held since 2000.  The former head coach is currently being investigated by the Alabama State Department of Education.  According to sources, he and Stanhope special education teacher Abby Butler conspired to alter the grades of a Mustangs football player.  Foshee has denied any wrongdoing.

Dean last coached the Mary Montgomery Vikings for one season in 2014.  He resigned before the end of the season due to his wife’s health.  The Vikings finished the season with a 4-7 record.

He brings in a career record of 55-20 over 7 seasons as a head coach, with his most successful season coming in 2013.  Dean lead the 2013 Charles Henderson Trojans to the 4A AHSAA Super 6 title game, falling to the state champion Oneonta Redskins 28-10.  Dean’s Trojans finished the season with a 14-1 record.

Dean has lead his teams to the postseason in every full year that he has served as a head coach.  He has added three region titles during his 7 seasons as a head coach.

There was speculation that Stanhope Elmore alumni and former Edgewood Academy head coach, Bobby Carr, could be tapped for the Mustangs top job after his abrupt resignation in mid June.  Carr announced that he had accepted the offensive coordinator position at Autauga Academy after Dean was approved as Stanhope’s head coach.
