4A Cordova upsets 5A Mortimer Jordan in season opener

Cordova, AL – Cordova came away with a big season opening victory in a battle of Blue Devils Friday night in Walker County.

The stat the stands out from the season opener is the disparity in offensive output.  Cordova out gained the defending 5A north division champs Jordan 406 yards to 107 while converting 22 first downs to 6 for Mortimer Jordan.  Each team turned the ball over three times apiece.

Jordan got on the board first with a 22 yard run Spencer Brown TD run.  Cordova struck back fast with a Javion Hill eight yard score evening the contest at 7 apiece in midway through the opening quarter.

Three possessions later, Jordan running back Spencer Brown crossed the goal line for the second time, this time from the 28 putting the visiting Devils up 14-7 with a minute and change before the break.

Late in the third, Cordava’s Kolbi Fuqua picked off a Jordan pass returning it 32 yards into the end zone, evening the score at 14 with just over a quarter to play.

After a Jordan punt, Cordova quartback Demetrius Kirk connected with Tyelan Chapman for a 45 yard touchdown through the air.  Peyton Tempelton’s point after put the home team up 21-14 with 11:17 left in the contest.

Mortimer Jordan came up short on a 4th and 17 play late in the fourth, giving the ball and the victory to the Cordova Blue Devils.

Jordan (0-1) travels to north Shelby County Friday night for a week 1 matchup with the 6A Pelham Panthers (0-1) at Ned Bearden Stadium.  The panthers are coming off a 21-14, forth quarter, loss to Homewood in the inaugural Milo’s Kickoff Classic at Samford University.

Cordova will take on another 5A Jefferson County squad, traveling to Pleasant Grove at Spartan Stadium.  This will be the Spartan’s opening game of 2016.
