Postgame Recap | Briarwood holds off Jordan rally to improve to 5-0

Birmingham, AL – The No. 1 ranked Briarwood Christian Lions held off a fourth quarter Mortimer Jordan rally to take down the Blue Devils 25-17 Friday night at Lion’s Pride Stadium.

This victory runs the Lions’ record to 4-0 all-time against the Blue Devils.  The two squads meet twice in 2016, Briarwood took their regular season meeting 23-14 before shutting out the Devils 15-0 in the 5A quarterfinals.

This go-around, Jordan took advantage of several Lion’s special teams miscues to rally back from a 15 point third quarter deficit and cut the lead to eight until Briarwood’s Cade Dickson put the brakes on the Blue Devils late comeback attempt picking off a Kourtlan Marsh pass with 1:20 minutes remaining.  The pick was the junior’s second of the night.

Senior Lions quarterback Michael Hiers finished the night with 214 yards passing, completing 14 of 18 attempts including two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground.

Tran-Reno racked up seven catches for 103 yards and a score while rushing for 74 yards on 18 attempts.

Carson Eddy hauled in two Hiers touchdown strikes and piled up 61 yards on only three receptions.

Sophomore Blue Devils quarterback Kourtlan Marsh completed 16 of 27 passes for 140 yards, ran for two scores and tossed a pair of interceptions.

On special teams, Mortimer Jordan kicker Feriram Sanchez-Gastelum connected on a 40 yard field goal and Julius Washington blocked the Lion’s first two extra point attempts.

Briarwood welcome’s St. Clair County (3-2) (2-1) to Lions Pride Stadium next week as they step back into 5A region 5 play.

Mortimer Jordan takes the week off before traveling to Cullman County to take on the West Point Warriors (3-2) (2-1) on October 13th.
