#8 Mtn Brook rallies to take down Spain Park

Mountain Brook, AL – The Mountain Brook Spartans (4-0) rallied from 14 points down to notch a 24-14 win over the Spain Park Jaguars (1-3) Friday night at Spartan Stadium.  

The win improved the Spartans to 4-0 on the season, 2-0 in 7A region 3 play, and extended the Mountain Brook win streak to three games over the Jaguars.  

The Jags jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a pair of big plays in the first half.  The first coming early in the first period as quarterback Mason Pronk connected with Jalen Washington for a 67 yard scoring strike.  Following a string of Spartan punts Washington extended the visitors lead to 14 on a 67 yard touchdown run.  

Aidan Hood gave the Spartans their only points of the first half, splitting the uprights from 24 yards out.  

The visitors carried a 14-3 advantage into the locker room.  

Momentum made a hard shift toward the home team two plays into the second half as Mountain Brook’s Alex Washington scooped up a Jaguars fumble returning it into the endzone and cutting the lead to 14-10.  

Later in the third period Daniel Wilbanks scored from just inside the Spain Park 10 yard line to give the Spartans their first lead of the contest.  

The Spartans closed the door on the Jags with a final scoring drive that featured a 35 yard run off a Hamp Green double-reverse and and fourth and one conversion capped by an A.J. Gates touchdown scamper.  

In the end the Spartans scored 24 unanswered points to earn the W over their Over the Mountain rivals.  

Spartans signal caller Strother Gibbs finished the night with 144 yards through the air, connecting on 14 of 18 passes.  A.J. Gates lead Mtn. Brook on the ground with 107 yards on 16 carries, Pierce Rodrigues hauled in four Gibbs passes for 73 yards.  

Spain Park running back Jalen Washington tallied 105 yards rushing and 93 yards through the air while accounting for both of the Jaguars touchdowns.  

Both teams continue 7A region 3 play next week.  Mountain Brook hosts rival Vestavia Hills (3-0) in a battle of unbeatens at Spartan Stadium.   Spain Park welcomes Hewitt-Trussville (3-1) to Bob Finley Field.
