Thompson takes 2019 7A State Title

Auburn, AL – The Thompson Warriors claimed their second state football title in program history Wednesday night knocking off the defending state champion Central-Phenix City Red Devils 40-14 Wednesday night in Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The victory secured Thompson’s second state football crown, the first coming in 1982, and avenged last year’s 52-7 title game lose to the Devils.

Warriors head coach Mark Freeman notched his 7th state football title as a head coach (1, Thompson, 2, Spanish Fort, 4 Bessemer Academy) while running his career record to 209-51 over 21 seasons.

Thompson senior quarterback Sawyer Pate completed 22-of-14 passes tor 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air and adding two scores on the ground in route to taking home the games Most Valuable Player honors.

Central bookended their season with a pair of natural site defeats to at the hands of 7A region 3 powers (Hoover in the annual AHSAA Kickoff Classic) in route to a 12-2 record.
