Blake Boren named Montevallo head coach

Montevallo, AL – A month after Brandon Wilcox stepped down as Montevallo High’s head football coach, the Bulldogs have their next leader on the gridiron.

Pike Road offensive coordinator Blake Boren was officially named the Shelby County program’s 22nd head football coach Thursday evening.

The move will be a homecoming of sorts for the first time head coach. Charles Boren, Blake’s father and longtime football coach lead the Montevallo program to a 28-22 record from 1998-2002.

He spent 2019 leading the record setting Pike Road offense to an 11-1 mark, advancing to the second round of the 3A postseason before falling to eventual state runner-up Mobile Christian. In the Montgomery County program’s first season of varsity competition, the Patriots finished the regular season undefeated, boasting the highest scoring offense in class 3A putting up an average of 46 points per contest.

Before taking over the Pike Road offense in 2019 Boren served as an assistant at powerhouse Hoover, helping lead the Bucs to a 28-2 record. After two seasons and a pair of Super 6 appearances he joined his father at Newton County high in Decatur, MS for one season before retuning to his alma mater Faulker University. During his five year stint at Faulker he served as the Eagles assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. The Birmingham native steeped back into the prep ranks in 2018, joining Chris Yeager’s staff at Mountain Brook. He helped lead the Spartans to a 9-3 record including a second round birth in the 7A postseason.

Boren’s record as a high school assistant currently stands at 52-12 including a pair of undefeated regular seasons, three playoff appearances and a state title.

He will lead Montevallo on the field for the first time August 21 as the Dawgs travel to Deatsville to take on the Marbury Bulldogs.
