AHSAA Hall of Fame head coach joins Ole Miss staff

Oxford, MS – Sylacaua naive and longtime Alabama prep football coach Doug Goodwin is joining Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss staff as a special teams analyst. He has been on Gus Malzahn’s Auburn staff since 2014, serving as the Tiger’s Director of High School Relations and NFL Liaison in addition to overseeing the team’s walk-on program.

Goodwin will reportedly assist the Rebels with breaking down the opposition and assist with special teams game planning as opposed to the administrative role that he played on The Plains.

Before jumping into the college ranks, Goodwin spent 29 seasons on the prep sidelines in Alabama. His teams at Marion County, Lineville, Demopolis, Russellville and Homewood made 22 postseason appearances, including a stretch of 18 consecutive playoff births from 1993 to 2010.

The 2015 AHSAA Hall of Fame inductee is the first coach in Alabama high school history to lead three different programs to a state title game. His Alabama prep record currently stands at 234-91 including 21 state playoff births, 14 region championships, five AHSAA title game apprentices, a 108-28 mark in region play and a state championship over 27 seasons.

After graduating from Auburn in 1984, Goodwin jumped into the coaching ranks as an assistant at Lanett before accepting his first head coaching position at Marion County in 1987. He remained in Guin for six seasons leading the Red Raiders to a 24-37 mark before taking over the 3A Lineville Aggies program in 1993.

During six seasons in Clay County he lead Lineville to a 59-17 record including six consecutive region titles and a pair of state title game appreances. He moved to 5A Demopolis in 1999, leading the Tigers to a 82-18 record including a 4A state championship in 2004 before accepting the Russellville Tigers top job in 2007. Over four seasons at Russellville he lead the powerhouse Golden Tigers to a 46-9 mark including a pair of trips to the 5A Super 7 and a 25-3 record in 5A region 8 play.

He took over a struggling Homewood program in 2011 leading the Patriots to a 23-10 record and a pair of region crowns before moving to the collegiate ranks.

Goodwin’s son Dustin will begin his third season as the head coach of the 6A Chelsea Hornets in 2020.
