Vestavia’s Sammy Dunn to be inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame

Vestavia Hills, AL – Legendary Vestavia Hills High School baseball coach Sammy Dunn will be posthumously inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame next year.

The Fairfield High and University of Montevallo graduate lead Vestavia to a combined 647-146 (.816) record including nine state titles over his 27 year career. Dunn’s 1998 team was named national champions by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2004.

Dunn, who passed away in 2004, was the winningest head baseball coach in Alabama high school history at the time of his passing.

The Bessemer native was the inducted into the Montevallo Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997, the Alabama Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000, the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Hall of Fame in 2004 and was part of the Vestavia Hills Sports Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 2010. He also received six Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Class 6A Coach of the Year awards and seven Jefferson County Coach of the Year awards.

Dunn’s son Casey, current head baseball coach at Samford University and former Auburn University baseball standout, is one of over 100 Vestavia players to earn college scholarships under he is leadership.

He will officially be inducted during the 77th annual ABCA Convention January 8th, 2021 at the Gaylord National in Washington, DC.

The baseball stadium at Vestavia Hill High School is named in his honor.
