Briarwood Christian tramples Corner 42-7

Birmingham, AL – The 6A Briarwood Christian Lions closed out the regular season with a 42-7 drubbing of the 5A Corner Yellow Jackets Friday night at Lion’s Pride Stadium. 

Briarwood improved to 8-2 on the season with their only two blemishes coming at the hands of 7A Spain Park and second ranked Mountain Brook.  Matthew Forester’s Lions will enter the postseason as the No. 2 seed in 6A Region 5. 

The Lions lead the Jackets 14-0 after the first two quarters before lighting up the Lion’s Pride Stadium scoreboard with four scores in the third quarter. Luke Reebals, who became the fifth player in Briarwood history to put up 1,000 yards rushing in a season, jumpstarted the third frame fireworks returning the opening kick 95 yards for a score.  Quarterback Christopher Vizzina connected with Reebals and Brooks Donnely for another pair of scores and Tyler Waugh added a 37 yard pick-six to put the game out of reach. 

Briarwood signal caller Christopher Vizzina connected on 9-of-16 passes for 135 yards and a pair of scores while running for 44 yards on five carries.  Luke Reebals lead the Lions rushing attack with 84 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries while pulling down a reception for 30 yards and returning a kick 95 yards for a score.  

Corner running back Tommy Reed carried the mail for the Yellow Jackets running for 158 yards and a score on 32 carries.  The standout senior elapsed 1,000 yards rushing on the year.  

Corner closes out 2020 at 4-6 on the season, 3-6 in 5A Region 6 play.  Rusty Rouse’s first year at the helm of the North Jefferson County program was highlighted by wins over St. Clair County, Dora, Lincoln and an overtime defeat over the Moody Blue Devils.

Briarwood will make their 28th consecutive appearance in the AHSAA postseason next Friday night welcoming the 7-3 Hartselle Tigers to Shelby County.  The Lions and Tigers have meet four times with each squad holding 2 victories apiece.  The programs meet in 2010 and 2011 in the class 5A semi-finals.
