Chase Smith named Spanish Fort head football coach

Spanish Fort, AL – Orange Beach head coach Chase Smith was officially approved as the Spanish Fort Toros fifth leader on the gridiron Thursday afternoon. 

Smith has spent the last two seasons building the upstart Orange Beach High School football program.  The Makos finished their first season of varsity competition at 3-9 followed by a 9-2 mark, highlighted by a playoff appearance, in 2021.  Before taking over at Orange Beach the Jacksonville State alum spent one season at the helm of the Robertsdale program.  He lead the 6A Bears to a 2-8 mark in 2018.  Earlier in his career, Smith served as an assistant at Spain Park, Greenville and Spanish Fort.  He spent 2011 to 2017 on staff at South Alabama, beginning as a graduate assistant, moving to Director of Football Operations and serving as tight ends coach from 2013-2017.

His career head coaching record currently stands at 14-6 with a 9-11 run in region play. 

Smith replaces former Toros head coach Ben Blackmon who resigned to accept the same position at Enterprise.  Blackman posted a 77-18 record including four region titles, seven playoff berths, three Super 7 appearances and a 6A state championship over seven seasons.

Spanish Fort’s 2021 season came to a close at 10-2 against the Opelika Bulldogs in the second round of the AHSAA Class 6A playoffs. 

Smith will lead the Toros on the field for the first time August 18th, on the road. at Baldwin County foe Fairhope.
