Oak Mountain names new head football coach

Birmingham, AL – The Oak Mountain Eagles traveled 1,915 miles to find their next head football coach.  The 7A program’s nationwide search ended with Southern California’s Shane McComb being named the Eagles’ 6th head football coach.

McComb comes to North Shelby County from Palm Desert High School, located near Palm Springs, California.  Over seven seasons at the helm of the Palm Desert program he has lead the Aztecs to a combined 53-20 record including six straight CIF district championships.  His Aztec squads have compiled a 33-2 record in their last 35 district matchups.  During a COVID shortened 2020 season, Palm Desert posted an unblemished 5-0 record before closing out both 2021 and 2022 at 8-3.

Oak Mountain parted ways with former head coach Tyler Crane who lead the Eagles to a 10-12 record including a 5-9 mark in Class 7A, Region 3 following the 2022 season.

The Golden State native began his coaching career at Rockford University in Illinois where he served as the program’s special teams coordinator and linebackers coach.  Before taking over at Palm Desert, he spent time as the defensive coordinator at New Mexico’s Alamagordo High School.

McComb is a graduate of Hemet (CA) High School where he received league most valuable player honors before being named first-team All-Mission Conference linebacker at Riverside City College.  He capped his college career as a team captain at Divison II Upper Iowa University.

Oak Mountain is coming off a 3-7 campaign in 2022.
