Plainview Claims Sand Mountain Tournament Title for Record 8th Consecutive Year

Rainsville, AL – Plainview High School’s towering 6-foot-6 senior, Landon White dominated on the hardwood in the finale of the annual Sand Mountain Basketball Tournament. The defending Class 3A state champion Bears, boasting a 14-3 record, clinched their eighth consecutive Sand Mountain Tournament title with a decisive 70-57 victory over the Geraldine Bulldogs

The finals took place on December 22nd in Rainsville, where White led the team with 18 points, securing MVP honors for his outstanding performance. His teammates also contributed significantly to the win: Cy Traylor netted 14 points, while Owen Wilborn and Sawyer Wilborn scored 13 and 12 points respectively. This record-setting eighth-straight win at the Sand Mountain tourney has placed the Bears in this week’s AHSAA Boys’ Basketball Spotlight.

This year marked the 70th iteration of the Sand Mountain Tournament, which dates back to 1953. Guided by Coach Cade Black, Plainview came out on top over North Sand Mountain and Crossville in the first two rounds of the tournament, with scores of 69-30 and 94-28, respectively.

Black, a former high school shooting record setter from Crossville, has taken up the coaching mantle at Plainview for the first time this year. Known for his exceptional 3-point shooting skills during his playing days for the Crossville Lions, Black seems to be an excellent match for the Bears. The team has twice led the nation in 3-point goals in recent years under the guidance of previous head coach Robi Coker. Coker moved to Class 6A Fort Payne after a successful 31-6 season last year, leaving behind an impressive 257-75 record over 10 seasons, including leading the Bears to back-to-back state championships in 2018 and 2019.
