Lauderdale County and Providence Christian Hang on to Claim Class 1A-3A State Tennis Titles

Mobile, AL – In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Lauderdale County High School Girls’ Tennis Team clinched their second consecutive Alabama high school state tennis championship at the AHSAA’s 2024 Class 1A/3A State Tennis Tournament. The event, hosted at the prestigious Mobile Tennis Center, concluded on a high note for the team under the guidance of Coach Haleigh Woodard.

The Tigers finished the two-day meet with an impressive total of 42 points, narrowly edging out Saint James, who finished a close second with 41 points after four of its athletes claimed singles titles. Indian Springs secured the third position with 23 points.

A standout performance came from sophomore Lizzie Tanner, who overcame a 6-1 first set deficit in the No. 2 singles title match, ultimately securing victory and contributing significantly to the team’s overall success. Lauderdale County also saw success in the doubles championships, winning two out of three events, highlighting their depth and teamwork.

On the boys’ side of the tournament, Providence Christian emerged victorious in the Class 1A/3A state tournament, outpacing Covenant Christian with a final score of 41-38 and solidifying their place at the top. The hard-fought competition had Tuscaloosa Academy rounding out the top three with 31 points.

Sophomore Ella Bentley from St. Luke’s Episcopal took home the No. 1 singles championship in a decisive match against Indian Springs senior, Sohana Caplash. The boys’ tournament was equally competitive, with notable performances across the board. Covenant Christian displayed a strong finish, capturing three singles championships and two doubles titles, showcasing the high level of talent within the teams.

Providence Christian built a significant lead during Thursday’s action, securing 37 of its 41 final points and setting the stage for their inaugural state title win. Key wins included freshman Mason McCallister’s victory in the No. 2 singles and seventh-grader Cole Harrison’s win in the No. 5 singles, which proved pivotal for Providence Christian’s success.

The final results underscore the intense competition and the high stakes of the AHSAA Class 1A/3A State Tennis Tournament.
