Gulf Shores Claims Class 5A Boys Soccer Title With 3-2 Overtime Thriller Over Guntersville

Huntsville, AL – Gulf Shores senior forward Talan Galvan scored the match-winning goal at 2:53 of the second overtime, leading the Dolphins to a 3-2 victory over Guntersville in the Class 5A Boys’ State Soccer Championships on Friday morning.

The match, held at Huntsville’s Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex at John Hunt Park, gives Gulf Shores (21-7-1) their first soccer title in school history and comes on the heels of the program’s AHSAA state football championship, earned in December at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Dolphins are coached by Danny Norton.

Coach Zach Ross’s Wildcats (25-4-1) took an early 2-0 lead with a penalty kick by A.J. Shumate at 7:14 and a goal by Brandon Maganaris at 38:19 in the first half.

The Dolphins began their comeback just 2:38 into the second half when Noah Guthrie scored, assisted by Bryan Nunez, cutting the Wildcats’ lead to 2-1. The pivotal goal significantly swayed  momentum toward the boys from the beach.

Fourteen minutes later, Galvan, who was named the games’ Most Valuable Player, scored on a penalty kick, tying the game at 2-2. The teams remained deadlocked through the rest of regulation and a scoreless first overtime. Galvan’s decisive goal came midway through the second overtime, securing the blue map.

Guntersville, attempting to win its first boys’ soccer title, managed just three shots on goal. Wildcats’ goalkeeper Slaide Mohr recorded seven saves, while Dolphins’ netminder Taylor Barkley notched one.
