Athens Clinches Second State Softball Title Since 2022

Golden Eagles Secure Championship in AHSAA Class 6A State Softball Tournament

OXFORD, AL – The Hartselle Lady Tigers team battled through the elimination bracket, ultimately setting up a winner-take-all finale against Athens High School in the AHSAA Class 6A State Softball Tournament, which concluded Wednesday at Choccolocco Park.

The Golden Eagles (29-14) emerged victorious, scoring eight runs in the decisive fifth inning of the if-necessary game of the double-elimination tournament. Lily Lowery pitched a complete game, leading Athens to a 12-9 victory over Hartselle in the state title showdown.

This triumph marks Athens’ second state title in the past three seasons and their sixth in school history. The Golden Eagles previously won fast-pitch titles in 2010 and 2022, as well as slow-pitch championships in 1989, 1990, and 1999.

Road to Victory: Key Games and Performances

Athens and Hartselle faced off three times over the last two days of the tournament. On Tuesday, Athens dominated the winners bracket championship game with an 11-1 victory. Hartselle (38-15-1) responded with an 18-8 win, forcing the championship round to extend to a second game.

In Hartselle’s 18-8 triumph, standout performances included Brit Godfrey, who recorded four hits and six RBIs, and K.J. Prather, who went 5-for-5. The Tigers amassed 20 hits against Athens pitcher Lexie Thornton, who pitched the entire game.

However, the Golden Eagles bounced back in the championship game. Caitlyn Tedford went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs, while Kara Crews and Morgan Stiles each contributed two RBIs. Tournament MVP Carly Ennis finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Despite allowing 13 hits and five walks, Lowery secured the pitching win for Athens.
