Opp Earns First State Softball Crown

OXFORD, AL – Opp High School’s Amaya Womack and Reese Cauley delivered crucial plays, leading the Bobcats to their first state softball championship by defeating the defending champion Plainview Lady Bears. 

Locked in a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, Womack smashed a one-out triple off the left field fence. She then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Tournament MVP Cauley followed with a solo home run, extending the lead to 4-2 in the Class 3A state softball championship held Friday at Choccolocco Park.

Cauley then pitched a flawless seventh inning to secure the victory, earning a complete-game win. She allowed six hits and struck out eight, closing the season with an impressive record of 43-6-1 for the Bobcats.

Tournament Highlights

Opp started the state tournament strong on Thursday with two shutout wins. They edged out Madison Academy 1-0 and defeated Plainview 1-0. In the winners’ bracket final, the Bobcats secured an 8-1 victory over Saint James.

Plainview (38-11), determined to defend their title, fought through the elimination bracket on Friday. They beat Madison Academy 9-5 and earned a 6-2 victory over Saint James, advancing to the championship round. Plainview had previously won Class 3A titles in 2021 and 2023.

Championship Game Recap

In the championship game, Plainview took an early lead with a run in the second inning and added another in the fifth. Opp, coached by David McVay, responded with two runs in the fourth inning. Womack and Cauley’s clutch performances in the sixth sealed the victory.

Opp’s Bradleigh Lanier went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Taylor Adams added a hit and an RBI. The Bobcats managed only five hits against Plainview starter Shianne Parker, who pitched a complete game with one strikeout.

Plainview’s Graidin Haas had two of the Bears’ six hits and scored a run. Lead-off hitter Abby Williams also contributed a hit and a run scored.

The Bobcats’ historic win was marked by exceptional performances from Womack and Cauley, solidifying Opp High School’s place in Alabama high school sports history. The triumph not only signifies a milestone for the team but also sets a new standard for future Bobcats.
