AHSAA All-Star Sports Week | Camren Thompson Shines in 4-1 North Soccer Victory

MONTGOMERY, AL – In an exciting matchup at the North-South Boys’ All-Star Game held on Wednesday at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex, North MVP Camren Thompson led his team to a decisive 4-1 victory, scoring two goals and providing an assist.

Coached by Matt Smith from Tanner and Springville’s Cody Wilkerson, the North squad surged in the second half, netting three goals to secure their win.

The game began with Thompson scoring the opening goal in the fourth minute, executing a powerful header off a corner kick delivered by Sawyer Felton of Briarwood Christian. However, the South team, which was under the guidance of Duston Higgins from Alma Bryant and Auburn’s Bill Ferguson, equalized just before halftime when Spanish Fort’s Ethan Spuler scored an unassisted goal, earning South MVP honors.

Early in the second half, Trey Byrd from Springville broke the 1-1 deadlock with a well-placed shot following an assist from Randy Cortes. Nearly nine minutes later, Cortes found the back of the net, assisted by Thompson. Thompson capped off the scoring with a goal via a pass by Sebastian Guerrero of John Carroll Catholic.

Despite a higher shot count of 19-14 in favor of the South, the North capitalized on their scoring chances more effectively. The South faced additional challenges when Fairhope’s Patrick Burns received a second yellow card, resulting in his ejection and leaving the team a man down for the final 12 minutes of play.

Goalkeepers Brycen Thrasher from Mars Hill Bible and Leeds’ Avery Langford combined for five saves for the North, while South goalkeepers Blake Rouse from Dothan and Baker’s Christopher Allen managed one save each.

This victory extends the North’s all-time lead in the all-star event to 16-4 losses, with 1 draw. Earlier in the day, the North girls also secured a win with a similar scoreline of 4-1, bringing their all-time series record to 19-3-1 since the summer event began in 1998.
