Drew Gilmer Officially Steps Down As Hoover Head Football Coach

Hoover, AL – In a meeting held on Thursday, the Hoover City Board of Education accepted the resignations of Bucs head football coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms. This move followed recent social media videos showing two Hoover coaches in questionable conduct during a practice session.

According to Hoover City Schools, the resignations are effective immediately. Superintendent Dr. Kevin Maddox emphasized the district’s commitment to the safety and well-being of students and staff, stating, “We maintain high expectations for our employees and students. Our current focus is on supporting our football players and coaching staff.”

Gilmer, who succeeded former Bucs head coach Wade Waldrop—who stepped down after the 2023 season to accept the head coaching position at Orange Beach High School—posted a 16-9 record over two seasons at the helm of the Hoover program.

Prior to his brief eight month tenure at Hoover, Gilmer had a successful run at Clay-Chalkville, claiming two of the last three Class 6A state championships and posting an 81-12 record over seven seasons.

Current Bucs assistant Chip English has been named the Bucs interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Hoover is slated to kick off their season on August 24, in South Florida, against Western High School of Davie, FL.

This change marks the fourth head coaching transition for the Bucs since 2021. From 1999 to 2021, the program was led by only two head coaches, with Rush Propst at the helm from 1999 to 2007, followed by Josh Niblett, who guided the team from 2008 to 2021.
