Clay-Chalkville Kicks Off Stuart Floyd Era With Win over Hueytown
CLAY, AL – Clay-Chalkville, ranked third and the reigning Class 6A champion, celebrated the beginning of the Stuart Floyd era with a decisive 28-7 victory against Hueytown at Cougar Stadium. This win marked a triumphant debut for Floyd, who stepped into the head coach role following Drew Gilmer’s departure.
The Cougars’ success was orchestrated by junior quarterback Aaron Fyre, who delivered an impressive performance with 204 passing yards and three touchdowns. Fyre’s precision was evident in his connections with tight end Jabari Staples, who was on the receiving end of all three touchdown passes, scoring from 29, 23, and 76 yards out.
Hueytown managed to put points on the board soon after halftime when quarterback JaBron Ellington connected with Keegan Horn for a 2-yard touchdown, marking their opener’s highlight.
Clay-Chalkville’s special teams also played a crucial role in their success. Nakarius Allen capitalized on a fumbled punt early in the second half, setting the stage for Joshua Woods to score on a 1-yard run. This turnover was further leveraged as Marlon Compton executed a 15-yard reverse play, crucial for setting up the subsequent score.
Fyre ended the night completing 10 of his 14 passes for 204 yards, with Staples catching five of those for a total of 132 yards and three touchdowns.
Looking ahead, Clay-Chalkville is set to face Ramsay in an upcoming Thursday matchup, while Hueytown will have a bye week.
