Explosive Second Quarter Lifts Homewood Past Briarwood Christian

HOMEWOOD, AL – The Homewood Patriots used an explosive second quarter to secure a 28-7 victory over Briarwood Christian Friday night at Waldrop Stadium. With the win, Homewood remains undefeated at 2-0 overall, and 1-0 in Class 6A, Region 5.
The game was tied 7-7 as the second quarter began, but the Patriots quickly shifted the momentum. Running back Evan Ausmer capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to break the tie. Shortly after, quarterback Will Myers electrified the crowd with two long rushing touchdowns—first a dazzling 55-yard run and then a 52-yarder—giving Homewood a 28-7 lead at the break.

Myers was instrumental in the victory, completing 13-of-17 passes for 131 yards and rushing for 126 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries. His contributions accounted for the majority of Homewood’s offensive output of 239 total yards. Ausmer added 31 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while receivers Newell and Kaleb Carson combined for 124 receiving yards on 11 catches.
Briarwood’s lone score came early in the second quarter when quarterback Charles Dedmon connected with Dane Whitehead for a 75-yard score. The Lions finished the game with 226 total yards, including 146 passing yards split between Dedmon and quarterback Brayden Robertson, who completed 11-of-18 passes for 146 yards with one interception. Whitehead hauled in three receptions for 92 yards.

Despite a scoreless second half, Homewood’s first-half dominance was enough to secure the win. Next week, Homewood travels to Mortimer Jordan to kickoff Class 6A, Region 5 play. Briarwood (0-2) will look to bounce back as they kick off their Class 5A, Region 5 slate against Ramsay at Lion’s Pride Stadium. Notably, the Lions started 0-2 in 2019 before achieving an impressive 11-game winning streak that took them to the Class 5A semifinals.
