Top Ranked Saraland Dominates Blount in Region Opener
SARALAND, AL – The Saraland Spartans, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, showcased their prowess in a dominant 59-6 victory over Blount in the Class 6A, Region 1 opening game.
Wide receiver Dillon Alfred shone brightly, catching three touchdown passes from quarterback KJ Lacey. Alfred’s scoring receptions spanned 3, 4, and 15 yards, culminating in four catches for 33 yards. Lacey delivered an impressive performance, completing 16 of 22 passes for 166 yards and five touchdowns. Santae McWilliams contributed significantly with 63 rushing yards on 12 carries, including a three-yard touchdown run, and added four catches for 30 yards.
The Spartans wasted no time, racing to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter, capitalizing on strong field position and three Blount turnovers. After Blount’s initial drive ended in a punt, Saraland marched 64 yards, with Lacey connecting with Alfred for a three-yard touchdown to ignite the scoring.
Saraland’s defense was bolstered by Auburn University commit Antonio Coleman’s return. On Blount’s second possession, quarterback Christopher Wiggins fumbled, and Damond Williams returned it to the three-yard line, setting up McWilliams’ touchdown run. A high snap on the next series led to a recovery by the Spartans in the end zone. Wiggins’ subsequent fumble was scooped up by AJ Martin, who returned it 24 yards for another score.
With 21 points off turnovers, the Spartans held a commanding 28-0 lead after the first quarter. Lacey and Alfred connected again early in the second quarter for another four-yard touchdown. A third TD came soon after with a 15-yard pass, boosting the score to 42-0. Saraland kept up the aerial assault with a 35-yard TD from CD Gill and a two-yard catch by Layton Strickland.
Tucker Singleton added a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter, sealing Saraland’s scoring. Blount managed to avoid a shutout as Wiggins found Terrance Miller for a three-yard touchdown with just two seconds left in the third quarter.
Saraland will visit reigning Class 5A state champion Gulf Shores next Friday, while Blount is set to host cross-town rival Murphy.
