8th Ranked Mountain Brook Edges Hueytown with Late Anderson Roberts Field Goal
HUEYTOWN, AL – In a thrilling Class 6A non-region matchup in western Jefferson County, Mountain Brook’s Anderson Roberts clinched a 23-21 victory, over the Hueytown Golden Gophers, with a decisive 40-yard field goal, with just 1 minute and 25 seconds remaining in the contest.
Mountain Brook, now 2-1, was behind 21-20 when they forced Hueytown (0-2) to punt. Taking over at their own 47-yard line with 5 minutes and 12 seconds remaining, the Spartans executed nine plays to reach Hueytown’s 23-yard line, setting up Roberts’ game-winning kick.
The victory was secured when Hayes Windle deflected a crucial fourth-down pass with only 46 seconds left in the game.
Mountain Brook struck first when quarterback Cayden Hofbauer bolted through the Hueytown defense for a 41-yard touchdown run, leaving 50 seconds in the first quarter.
The Spartans extended their lead to 14-0 thanks to Stuart Andrews, who dominated the ground game including a key 15-yard run during an 81-yard scoring drive. Andrews capped off the drive with a 26-yard run, concluding with a 1-yard plunge into the endzone.
Hueytown responded with a 59-yard drive, capped by a 20-yard touchdown run by AJ Robinson with 4 minutes and 15 seconds left, cutting the lead to 14-7.
Lawson McKnight rounded out the first-half scoring for Mountain Brook, charging through several defenders for a bullish 22-yard touchdown run with 1 minute and 3 seconds to go. A missed extra point left the Spartans up 20-7 at the half.
After the break, Juquarius Brooks reignited the Gopher’s hopes by returning the second-half kickoff 85 yards to narrow the gap to 20-14. Quarterback Jebron Ellington then connected with Ji’quez Daniel on a short slant pass that turned into a 43-yard touchdown with 10 minutes and 21 seconds remaining in the final quarter. Jesus Sosa’s successful PAT put Hueytown ahead 21-20.
Mountain Brook kicks off Class 6A, Region 6 play next Friday night welcoming the Pell City Panthers (1-2, 0-1) to Spartan Stadium. Hueytown travels to Cottondale to take on the Paul Bryant Stampede (0-3, 0-1).
