Homewood Downs Mortimer Jordan 49-21
KIMBERLY, AL – The Homewood Patriots, ranked ninth in Class 6A, kicked off Region 5 play with an impressive 49-21 victory over Mortimer Jordan on Friday night at Jimmie Trotter Field. The Patriots held a 7-0 advantage after the first quarter and continued their dominance by adding 14 points in each of the remaining three periods.
Homewood (3-0,1-0) rolled to an impressive 454 total yards despite being outgained by the Blue Devils 141 yards to 100.
Tomon Felton shined for head coach Ben Berguson’s Patriots, securing three touchdown receptions of 32, 59, and 64 yards. Will Myers played a pivotal role, throwing five touchdown passes. Newell’s other scoring strikes went to Kylen Newell for 63 yards and Logan Johnson for six. Evan Ausmer and Eric Davidson added rushing scores of eight and three yards respectively.
For Mortimer Jordan, quarterback Blaze Neely completed 11-of-20 passes for 136 yards, and a pair of scores. Neely also rushed nine times for 49 yards. Parker Reno ran for 43 yards on 14 carries, while Micah Gatson added 29 yards on seven carries and caught a 42-yard pass.
The Blue Devils’ touchdowns came from an 11-yard pass from Neely to Reno, a 1-yard run by Jacob Cawley, and a 13-yard Tanner Rice reception.
Looking ahead, Homewood will welcome the Woodlawn Colonels to Waldrop Stadium to continue region play. Mortimer Jordan will travel to Birmingham to take on the undefeated and second ranked Parker Thundering Herd.
