Hoover Tops Hewitt-Trussville 8-7 in Fourth Quarter Thriller
TRUSSVILLE, AL – In a soggy showdown at Husky Stadium, Hoover’s Mac Beason and Jonah Winston orchestrated an impressive last-minute drive that secured an 8-7 win against the No. 5 ranked Hewitt-Trussville Huskies (3-1, 1-1). The win catapults the No. 7-ranked Bucs to a 3-1 overall record and 2-0 in Class 7A, Region 3 play.
The pivotal moment arrived with only 26 ticks left on the clock. Winston capped off a six-play, 51-yard march by plunging into the end zone from 1 yard out, scoring the Bucs’ sole touchdown.
Eschewing the safer route of playing for overtime, Hoover head coach Chip English opted for a gutsy 2-point conversion attempt. Beason found Hunter Purdue in the end zone, clinching the lead at 8-7.
Despite Hewitt-Trussville’s swift advance into Hoover territory, their attempt to regain the lead fell short. A 45-yard field goal attempt sailed wide as the game clock struck zero, putting the game on ice.
Beason completed 12-of-17 passes for a total of 134 yards but was intercepted twice. Winston completed 1-of-2 passes for 12 yards, also securing the game-winning touchdown on the ground. On the rushing front, JR Mosley carried 18 times for 69 yards. Kelian Jefferson added eight carries for 46 yards, while AJ Allen contributed 13 yards on the ground. Jeremiah Tabb and Ae’Mari Towns combined for 62 receiving yards on three catches each, while Reggie Jackson logged four receptions for 39 yards.
For Hewitt-Trussville, quarterback Noah Dobbins went 10-of-16 for 73 passing yards and scored once on the ground, adding another 19 rushing yards. Deuce Alston led the Husky ground attack with 59 yards on 13 carries, and CJ Davis added 53 yards on four carries. Jacob Serena made three receptions totaling 16 yards.
Looking ahead, the Bucs welcome Region 3 newcomer Prattville (4-0, 2-0) to the Hoover Met next Friday night. Hewitt-Trussville will look to bounce back, hosting Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (2-2, 0-2).
