Parker Rallies to Claim 14-10 Victory over Hoover

HOOVER, AL – In an exhilarating interclass matchup at the Hoover Met, Parker’s Timothy Merritt led the Thundering Herd (5-1, 2-0) to a thrilling 14-10 victory over the Hoover Bucs.

The Herd, ranked fourth in Class 6A, showcased a strong defense, keeping Class 7A’s fifth-ranked Bucs to just 88 yards without conceding an offensive touchdown.

Hoover struck first with a 32-yard field goal by James Bryant, capping a 6-play, 49-yard drive midway through the first quarter. However, Parker took the lead before halftime when Merritt connected with Kentrell Davis for a 35-yard touchdown pass, putting the visitors up 7-3.

The second half opened with both teams experiencing two three-and-outs each. Hoover reclaimed a 10-7 advantage as Justyn Hartley returned a fumble for a 25-yard score on the last play of the third quarter. Hartley also contributed defensively with two sacks in the contest.

Coach Frank Warren’s Parker squad orchestrated a decisive drive in the final three minutes. Merritt’s 19-yard pass to Terence Gaines on 3rd-and-12, combined with Na’eem Offord’s powerful 25-yard gain, pushed the Thundering Herd into Hoover territory. Merritt then sealed the win with a 5-yard touchdown run with just 1:26 left on the clock.

Hoover, now 4-2, began their final drive at the 41-yard line. However, Mac Beason suffered a sack, followed by two incomplete passes, putting the game on ice.

Merritt, committed to Miami as a defensive back, completed 6-of-11 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown while adding 15 carries for 28 yards, including the game-winning score. Gaines led the Parker rushing attack with 17 carries for 75 yards, Offord added 82 yards on 11 carries. Davis’ contribution included a 35-yard touchdown catch. Defensive end Robert Taylor, a sophomore, recorded two sacks and nearly scored a pick-6 before being sidelined during Parker’s last defensive stand.
