Thrilling Comeback Lifts Briarwood Christian Past 4th Ranked Leeds
BIRMINGHAM, AL – In a thrilling homecoming game, Briarwood Christian running back Luke Reynolds made an unforgettable return, rushing for 168 yards and lighting up the Lions Pride Stadium scoreboard three times. The Lions staged a remarkable comeback, scoring 31 unanswered points to defeat the previously undefeated Leeds Green Wave.
This victory marked Briarwood’s first win of the season, improving their record to 1-5, while Leeds, ranked 4th in Class 5A, slips to 5-1.
Reynolds dominated the second half, scoring touchdowns in three consecutive possessions, which sealed the upset victory for head coach Matthew Forester’s Lions.
The Green Wave jumped to a two score lead, going up 14-0 by the middle of the second quarter. Senior quarterback Conner Nelson spearheaded Leeds’ attack with a 6-yard rushing touchdown and a 25-yard pass to Brooks Ford for his second score. Nelson wrapped up the game with 82 rushing yards and 56 passing yards.
Reynolds changed the game’s momentum with a stunning 48-yard run on the Lions’ next series, setting up their opening score six plays later. Briarwood’s defense was impenetrable for the rest of the game, preventing Leeds from achieving a first down until their final drive late in the fourth quarter.
Leeds quarterback Conner Nelson finished the night with 56 yards through the air while running for 82.
Looking ahead, the Lions are set to travel to North Jefferson County to face the unbeaten Corner Yellow Jackets (5-0). Meanwhile, Leeds will look to bounce back next Friday night hosting the St. Clair County Saints (2-3) at Homer Smiles Field.
