Danny Horn Becomes AHSAA’s Winningest Head Football Coach

MONTGOMERY, AL – With Central Clay County’s 29-7 win over Citronelle on Friday night, Coach Danny Horn has become the winningest football coach in AHSAA history.

Horn’s record now stands at 358-97, surpassing UMS-Wright’s Terry Curtis, whose record is 357-102-0 after the night’s games. Both coaches started their careers in 1989 and have since remained prominent figures in Alabama high school footballt, marking 36 years of coaching excellence.

Horn and Curtis are the only two coaches in AHSAA history to win eight state football championships. Horn clinched six titles with Clay County and added two more after Clay County merged with Lineville to form Central Clay County.

Another Hall-of-Fame coach, Paul Benefield of Fyffe, is also closing in on this remarkable milestone. With Fyffe’s 49-17 victory over Sylvania this week, Benefield’s record is now 355-58-0. Benefield began his head-coaching career in 2002 and has won seven state championships.

The simultaneous success of these three coaches is a unique occurrence in AHSAA football history. With the season still in progress, the race for the top spot remains fiercely competitive, and any of these legendary figures could secure the leading position by the end of the season.
