Mountain Brook Earns 47-30 Come From Behind Win Over Pinson Valley

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL – The Mountain Brook Spartans overcame a two point halftime deficit to top the Pinson Valley Indians 47-30 Thursday night in a Class 6A, Region 6 matchup at Spartan Stadium. 

With the victory, The Spartans improve to 5-3, 2-2 in region play. Pinson Valley slips to 1-6 (1-3). 

The game was highlighted by a pair of Pinson Valley kickoff return touchdowns and a total of four turnovers.

Stuart Andrews led Mountain Brook’s offense with an impressive performance on the ground, rushing for 197 yards and scoring four touchdowns on 35 carries.

The action began with Pinson Valley’s Floyd Calhoun returning the opening kickoff 95 yards into the endzone followed by a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Mountain Brook quickly responded, taking a one point lead, thanks to a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cayden Hofbauer to Sam Smith. However, Pinson Valley answered with a 66-yard drive over 14 plays, culminating in a Derrico Freeman 2-yard touchdown run, putting the visitors back on top 12-7.

Anderson Roberts closed the gap with a 21-yard field goal, reducing Pinson Valley’s lead to 12-10. Yet, Demarcus Waldrop stunned with an 83-yard kickoff return touchdown, extending the Indians’ advantage.

Just before halftime, Andrews powered through for a 1-yard touchdown, cutting the Spartans’ deficit to 18-16.

After the break, the Spartans dominated. Andrews secured a 9-yard touchdown run, followed by a 23-yard field goal from Roberts, giving Mountain Brook a 26-18 lead in the third quarter. Miller Crumpton’s fumble recovery on the following kickoff set up another touchdown from Andrews on a 4-yard run. Hayes Windle sealed the deal with a pick-six, cementing the region in for head coach Chris Yeager’s Spartans.  

Hofbauer finished the night completing 9-of-17 passes for 156 yards, including a touchdown and an interception. Smith lead the Spartan receiving corps with 64 yards and a touchdown on three catches, while John Colvin made three grabs for 61 yards added 61 yards. Defensively, Bo Currie, Hayes Windle, and Cannon Mussafer added interceptions for the Mountain Brook defense.  

For the Indians, Freeman completed 5-of-16 throws for 99 yards with three interceptions but impressed on the ground with 140 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Calhoun complemented his 95-yard kickoff return with 69 rushing yards on 17 attempts. Christian Thomas was the top receiver with 90 yards on four catches, and Kaden Edwards secured an interception for the Indian defense.

Looking ahead, Mountain Brook will host the Huffman Vikings (1-5, 0-3) next Friday night while Pinson Valley welcomes Pell City (2-4, 1-3) to Willie Adams Stadium.
