5th Ranked Oxford Upsets No. 2 Clay-Chalkville to Claim 6A Region 6 Title

OXFORD, AL – The Oxford Yellow Jackets, ranked fifth in Class 6A, pulled off an impressive victory against the second-ranked Clay-Chalkville Cougars, putting an end to the defending 6A state champions’ 21-game winning streak.

On Friday night at Lamar Field, the Yellow Jackets delivered a stunning performance by scoring 21 consecutive points, leading to a 21-10 victory and handing the Cougars their first region setback since 2020.

This victory boosts head coach Sam Adams’ squad to an perfect 8-0 and clinches their first region title since 2021. Meanwhile, Clay-Chalkville’s record slips to 7-1 overall,  4-1 in region play.

The Cougars initially took a 10-0 lead with a 33-yard field goal by Joseph Del Toro and a 1-yard touchdown run by Joshua Woods midway through the second quarter. Oxford’s rally was powered by two Mason Mims to Nick Richardson touchdown strikes and a rushing touchdown courtesy of Caleb Wynn.

Mims finished the night completing 13-of-19 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, Keenan Britt led the Jackets with 11 stops and a pair of sacks.

Looking ahead, both teams will return to the gridiron next Thursday night. Oxford will travel to Birmingham to face the Huffman Vikings (1-7, 0-5). Clay-Chalkville will make the short trek to Willie Adams Stadium to take on rival Pinson Valley (1-7, 1-4).
