Montgomery Catholic Earns 6th Straight Region Crown with 38-0 Victory over Andalusia

ANDALUSIA, AL – The Montgomery Catholic Knights, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, secured their sixth consecutive region title with a decisive 38-0 victory over the Andalusia Bulldogs on Friday night. This win marked the Knights’ 24th consecutive win under head coach Kirk Johnson, with their last loss being a narrow 29-26 defeat to Andalusia in the Class 4A semifinals on November 25, 2022.

The Knights capped the regular season with an unblemished 9-0 record overall, 6-0 in Class 5A, Region 2. Andalusia ended the regular season with a 5-5 mark, 4-2 in region play.

The Class 5A, Region 2 finale saw Catholic freshman signal caller Kingston Preyear pass for an impressive 210 yards completing 8-of-14 throws and four scores against one interception. BJ Bedgood was Preyear’s favorite target catching three passes for 91 yards and a touchdown, as well as returning a kickoff 94 yards for another score. 

JJ Williams contributed significantly, catching two passes for 75 yards and scoring a touchdown. Gio Hayner lead the Knight rushing attack, carrying the ball 16 times, for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Harriell added 50 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. 

Defensively, the Knights were led by Kam Miller, who made 12 tackles with three behind the line of scrimmage. Garrett Sanford also excelled with six tackles, including three for loss, while Jo Pierce notched five stops and an interception. Gavin Phelan added five tackles and recovered a fumble.

Looking ahead, the defending Class 4A state champion Knights will enjoy a bye week before hosting a Class 5A playoff game on November 8. Andalusia will also take a week off before traveling for the first round of the postseason.
