Homewood Rolls Past James Clemens 24-10 in Regular Season Finale

HOMEWOOD, AL – The Homewood Patriots, ranked 7th in Class 6A, downed the Class 7A James Clemens Jets 24-10 to cap the regular season Friday night at Waldrop Stadium.

The win improves head coach Ben Berguson’s Patriots to an impressive 8-2 record, while the Jets fall to 6-4. Both teams are set to host playoff games next Friday night, marking the beginning of the AHSAA postseason.

The Patriots lit up the Bob Newton Field scoreboard early, as senior kicker Whit Armistead split the uprights from 34 yards out to put the home team up 3-0. 

James Clemens quickly responded with a 41-yard field goal courtesy of Anthony Ortiz, leveling the score at 3-3 near the end of the first quarter.

The Patriots regained the lead, going up 10-3 when Evan Ausmer bolted across the goal line from two yards out at the start of the second quarter. The gap widened to 17-3 as quarterback Kaleb Carson connected with Tomon Felton for a 28-yard score just over four minutes before halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Eric Davidson extended Homewood’s lead by charging up the middle for a one-yard touchdown, giving the Patriots a commanding 24-3 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.

The Jets answered back with a 51-yard touchdown pass on their subsequent possession, but the hill was too high to climb for the visitors from the Tennessee Valley.

Carson completed 11-of-16 passes for 177 yards, securing one touchdown against a pair of interceptions. Evan Ausmer led the Patriot rushing attack, amassing 72 yards on 16 carries, while Kylen Newell caught eight passes for 124 yards.

Looking ahead, the Patriots will welcome the Athens Golden Eagles (8-2) to West Oxmore next Friday night. James Clemens will face off against the defending Class 7A champion Central-Phenix City Red Devils (7-2) at Madison City Schools Stadium.
