Flag Football | Central-Phenix City Sets School Passing Record In First-Round Playoff Victory over Theodore
MONTGOMERY, AL – The Central-Phenix City Red Devils flag football squad, ranked No. 1 nationally by USA Today, opened the AHSAA State Flag Football playoffs Monday night in top form setting a school passing record in its 46-0 win over the Theodore Bobcats in the Class 6A-7A first-round opener.
Central set the record with 317 yards and seven touchdown through the air in their win over the Bobcats. Quarterback Gerritt Griggs was 14-of-18 passing for 287 yards and seven touchdown passes. Central captured the the 6A-7A state title last season and has been ranked No. 1 nationally for most of the season this year as flag football began its first official season as an AHSAA sanctioned sport.
Eight games were played Monday night with the Wenonah Dragons, last year’s 1A-5A state champs, blanking J.B. Pennington 42-0. Other winners Monday night included, in Class 6A-7A, Alma Bryant over Smiths Station 27-12 and Dothan downing Brookwood 7-0. In Class 1A-5A, four more games were played with B.C. Rain beating Lee-Scott Academy 24-20, last year’s 1A-5A runner-up Montgomery Catholic blanking Carroll-Ozark 34-0, Moody topping St. Clair County 34-0, and Tallassee beating Satsuma 68-0.
First-round play continues this week with 13 more games in Class 6A-7A, and 11 games remaining in Class 1A-5A. A total of 14 playoff games are scheduled for Tuesday, seven for Wednesday and the remaining three games are scheduled for Thursday. Second-round matchups will kickoff next week.
