AHSAA Girls Flag Football | Central Extends Winning Streak, Spain Park and Hewitt-Trussville Enter National Rankings

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Central-Phenix City High School’s Lady Red Devils continued their flag football dominance with a decisive 34-0 victory over previously undefeated Alma Bryant in the Class 6A/7A quarterfinals. This win marks their 35th consecutive victory, further cementing their position as the No. 1 team in the USA Today National Girls’ Flag Football Poll for the 10th straight week.

Led by Coach Mitchell Holt, Central-Phenix City boasts an impressive record. The team went 18-0 last season, claiming the Class 6A/7A state title by defeating Vestavia Hills at Bryant-Denny Stadium. This year marks the first time flag football is recognized as an official championship sport by the AHSAA, joining girls’ wrestling on the list.

Next up, the Lady Red Devils (17-0) will host Auburn in the semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The winner will advance to the Super 7 finals at Birmingham’s Protective Stadium, scheduled for Dec. 4 at 3 p.m.

Spain Park and Hewitt-Trussville Make National Top 25

Spain Park (16-1-1) entered the USA Today rankings at No. 19 after defeating Vestavia Hills 34-18 in the quarterfinals. Hewitt-Trussville (13-1) also cracked the rankings at No. 24 with a narrow 26-20 win over Prattville (17-3).

The Jaguars and Huskies will face off in the second Class 6A/7A semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m., with a spot in the finals on the line.

Wenonah Climbs to No. 14

Wenonah (23-1) jumped to No. 14 in this week’s poll following a thrilling 19-13 overtime victory over John Carroll Catholic in the Class 1A/5A quarterfinals. The Lady Dragons will play Moody (16-2) on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 6 p.m. in the semifinals. Moody previously handed Wenonah its only loss of the season earlier this year.

Class 1A/5A South Showdown

Additionally, Tallassee (13-1-1) will take on Montgomery Catholic (15-4) in the other Class 1A/5A semifinal on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. The winners of the semifinals will meet in the Class 1A/5A finals to open the 2024 Super 7 Championships on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m.

Super 7 Coverage and Broadcast Details

Both girl’s flag football championship games will air live on the AHSAA TV Network, including Alabama Public Television (APT) stations. APT, the Super 7’s title sponsor for the second consecutive year, will also live stream all games alongside the NFHS Network.

Play-by-play coverage of the flag football finals will be handled by broadcaster Landrum Roberts, with commentary from Susan Carothers, the host of AHSAA TV Weekly.

Boys’ Class 7A Semifinals

The boys’ Class 7A semifinals, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22, will feature defending champion Central-Phenix City (9-2) hosting Hoover (10-2) and last year’s runner-up Thompson (9-3) hosting Enterprise (8-4). The winners will meet in the finals at Protective Stadium on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m., following the girls’ flag football championship games.
