Parker downs Mountain Brook 28-7 to Advance to Class 6A Quarterfinals
MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL – The Parker Thundering Herd secured a commanding 28-7 victory over the Mountain Brook Spartans in the second round of the AHSAA Class 6A playoffs Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
This decisive win marks Parker’s second over Mountain Brook this season, having beaten the Spartans 30-16 in week one of the regular season. Parker improves to 11-1, while Mountain Brook’s season comes to close at 8-4.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
Parker lit up the scoreboard early, making a statement on their third offensive play when Terrence Gaines broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run to put the visitors up 7-0.
Mountain Brook responded with a disciplined 17-play scoring drive, capped by a Cayden Hofbauer 3-yard touchdown pass to Archie Andrews, leveling the score at 7-7 late in the first quarter.
Momentum Swings Parker’s Way
Parker took control in the second quarter, starting with a crucial fourth-down conversion by quarterback Dylan Reese, who found Jacoby Quates for a key gain. Shortly after, Na’eem Offord powered his way into the end zone from just inside the Spartan five yard line. Offord struck once more before halftime, weaving through defenders for a 15-yard touchdown, giving Parker a 21-7 advantage.
Mountain Brook threatened just before the break, taking advantage of a string of Parker penalties to reach the 2-yard line. Initially, the Spartans lined up for a short field goal, but an encroachment penalty moved the ball to the 1. Opting to go for the touchdown, the Spartans were stopped short, leaving the score 21-7 at the half.
Second Half Dominance by Parker’s Defense
Mountain Brook came out strong in the third quarter, driving into the Parker red zone. However, a costly fumble recovered by Offord halted their momentum.
Parker’s relentless defense continued to shine, shutting down Mountain Brook’s offense and forcing multiple turnovers. Late in the game, Offord put the game on ice with his third touchdown, running through defenders to put the game out of reach. Talton Thomas and Timothy Merritt added key turnovers, with Merritt’s fourth-quarter interception ending any hopes of a Spartan comeback.
Key Performances
Parker’s Na’eem Offord demonstrated his all-around talent with three touchdowns, a fumble recovery, and a sack, totaling 93 yards on nine touches. Terrence Gaines highlighted the Herd’s ground game, leading all rushers with 170 yards on 15 carries.
Mountain Brook’s Cayden Hofbauer finished 10-of-20 for 81 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, while also picking up 48 rushing yards. Stuart Andrews led the Spartans’ rushing attack with 112 yards on 23 carries, and Sam Smith topped their receiving corps with six catches for 66 yards.
