Jonathan Chandler Named Montgomery Catholic Head Football Coach

MONTGOMERY, AL – Jonathan Chandler, a native of Opelika and former Troy University player, has been named the 22nd head football coach at Montgomery Catholic. Chandler, who previously served as the offensive coordinator at Pike Road, succeeds Kirk Johnson, the former Knights head coach who stepped down to lead Benjamin Russell High School. 

Under Johnson’s leadership, Montgomery Catholic amassed a 55-2 record, secured state championships in 2023 (Class 4A) and 2024 (Class 5A), and went 16-2 in playoff matchups.

“My family and I are honored and excited to join this community as the new head football coach at Montgomery Catholic,” Chandler shared in a school release. “We look forward to working with our talented student-athletes, dedicated faculty and staff, and supportive parents to create a program that embodies hard work and respect.” 

This marks Chandler’s first stint as head coach. His coaching career includes positions as a graduate assistant at Troy University and assistant coaching roles at Opelika, Wetumpka, and Pike Road.

An introductory press conference is scheduled for Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the PICE Knights Arena to formally introduce Chandler to the Montgomery Catholic community. 

The reigning Class 5A state champion Knights are currently riding a 29 game winning streak.
