Holt High School to Discontinue Varsity Sports After 2025-26 Season

Holt High School in Tuscaloosa will no longer offer varsity sports after the 2025-26 academic year, according to an announcement made Wednesday by Principal Dr. Daniel Dickens and Tuscaloosa County School System Superintendent Dr. Keri Johnson. 

The decision stems from “steadily declining participation rates and financial unsustainability,” as stated in the official release. 

Following the conclusion of the 2025-26 athletics season, Holt High students will have the option to join varsity teams at either Brookwood High or Tuscaloosa County High based on their residential area, while maintaining their enrollment at Holt. 

A meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 10, in the Holt High cafeteria to discuss plans for the school’s future. 

“Our priority is to provide our student-athletes with the best opportunities for success,” the release stated. “This decision reflects what we believe is in the best interest of both current and future students. Club sports and other extracurricular activities will remain available at Holt High.” 

Holt High has a history of athletic success, including a Class 5A state volleyball championship in 1989. 

Currently, Holt offers baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, flag football, football, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball.  

The football team posted a 4-6 record in the 2024 season after finishing 1-9 in 2023. The Ironmen are 19-110 since 2011 and last won a playoff game in 1998.
