Holt High School Reinstates Varsity Athletics
TUSCALOOSA, AL – Holt High School will continue offering varsity sports, as confirmed by an updated decision from the Tuscaloosa County School System.
During a Monday meeting, Superintendent Dr. Keri Johnson announced that varsity athletics would remain at the school, overturning a decision made just five days earlier to discontinue the program after the 2025-26 academic year. The original announcement cited “declining participation rates” and “financial challenges” as the primary reasons for cutting varsity sports.
An earlier statement explaining the initial decision had emphasized the school system’s intent to focus on student opportunities, stating, “This decision prioritizes the current and future success of our students.” While varsity athletics were set to be removed, the school planned to continue offering club sports and extracurricular activities.
