Tallassee, Scottsboro, Athens and Thompson Crowned State Wrestling Champions
Thompson and Weaver Make History with AHSAA’s First Girls’ Wrestling Titles
HUNTSVILLE, AL – History was made at the 70th AHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Von Braun Center as Weaver and Thompson High Schools claimed the first-ever girls’ wrestling state titles. Weaver dominated the 1A/5A division, finishing with 203.5 points, while Thompson led the 6A/7A division with 150 points.
Weaver Secures 1A/5A Girls’ Title
Weaver’s Lady Bearcats, led by Head Coach Justin Brown, clinched the inaugural 1A/5A girls’ title before the final day of competition. Standout performances by a talented roster fueled Weaver’s 203.5-point finish, ahead of Alexandria (77 points) and Arab (53 points).
Sophomore Ali Anderson (107 pounds) kicked off the championship round with a dominant victory, pinning Arab’s Madelynn King in just 1:31. The Johannson sisters were also pivotal. Senior Lena Johannson capped her undefeated season (39-0) with a decisive 15-0 technical fall in the 145-pound finals. Her younger sisters, Mariah (132 pounds) and seventh-grader Nya (100 pounds), also reached the finals. Mariah claimed her title with a 35-3 record, while Nya finished as runner-up in her first finals appearance.
Overall, seven Weaver wrestlers earned individual championships, including Lena, Mariah, and Ali, as well as Jaylee Carter (114), Ashlyn Coleman (126), Heaven Bishop (165), and Baleigh Brown (185). Lena Johannson’s historic season earned her the 1A/5A Most Outstanding Wrestler award.

Thompson Claims 6A/7A Girls’ Championship
Thompson High School, coached by Carmesha Pete, captured the 6A/7A championship with 150 points, outpacing Daphne (136 points) and Enterprise (98.5 points). Senior Lynleigh Weltzin achieved a thrilling upset in the 120-pound finals, securing an 8-7 decision against Grissom’s previously undefeated Jessalynn Allen (30-1), solidifying her family’s place in history.
Her brother, senior Jordan Weltzin, also brought home gold for Thompson, winning the boys’ Class 7A 138-pound title with a 5-0 decision over Kaden Clark of Bob Jones. The Weltzins made AHSAA history as the first brother-sister duo to win state titles in the same tournament.
