Thompson Wrestlers Dominate Day 2 of AHSAA State Wrestling Championships
HUNTSVILLE, AL – The 80th AHSAA State Wrestling Championships are heating up at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center, with Thompson High School leading the Class 7A boys’ and Class 6A-7A girls’ divisions after Friday’s action.
7A Boys’ Division
Thompson totaled 177.5 points through Day 2. The Warriors, led by Coach Sean Weltzin, have won nine state titles between 2011 and 2022 but are looking to reclaim the top spot after two years of being dethroned by rivals Vestavia Hills (2023) and Huntsville (2024).
Thompson has four wrestlers advancing to Saturday’s championship matches:
- Jordan Weltzin (47-9), 138-pound senior
- Braylen Johnson (21-6), 106-pound freshman
- Kiowa Vines (30-5), 157-pound junior
- Jaiden Moore (42-9), 165-pound senior
Vestavia Hills and defending champion Huntsville are tied for third with 146 points. Vestavia Hills has five athletes advancing to the finals, while Huntsville features its dynamic Simon brothers:
- Yanik Simon (37-0): Undefeated in the 150-pound division
- Kiyan Simon (32-1): 120-pound standout

6A Boys’ Division
Athens leads with 128.5 points in Class 6A, narrowly ahead of Pike Road (119) and defending champion Mountain Brook (118.5).
1A-4A Boys’ Division
Scottsboro holds a commanding lead in 1A-4A with 127 points over second-place Hayden (89.5). Corner (85) and Arab (84.5) round out the top four.
1A-4A Boys’ Undefeated Wrestlers Advancing
- Mason Hahm (31-0), White Plains, 126 pounds
- Brody Hayes (39-0), T.R. Miller, 138 pounds
- Land Bell (56-0), Tallassee, 150 pounds
- Austen Mayfield (41-0), Cleburne County, 157 pounds
- Layton Pohl (42-0), New Hope, 190 pounds
Tallassee standout Land Bell is aiming for his third consecutive state crown.
6A-7A Girls’ Division
Thompson also leads the new Class 6A-7A girls’ division with 136 points as this is the first year the event is recognized as an official state championship. The Lady Warriors will send an impressive eight athletes to the finals across 12 weight classes.
Trailing are Daphne (115 points) and Enterprise (71 points). Among standout undefeated finalists:
- Juliana Eldredge (34-0), Wetumpka, 114 pounds
- Jessalynn Allen (30-0), Grissom, 120 pounds
- Mallory Ladd (33-0), Enterprise, 185 pounds

1A-5A Girls’ Division
Weaver continues to dominate the Class 1A-5A girls’ competition with 166 points—far ahead of Alexandria (63.5) and Arab (47). The Bearcats have three sisters advancing to the finals:
- Nya Johannson (33-8), 100 pounds, 7th grade
- Mariah Johannson (34-3), 132 pounds, freshman
- Lena Johannson (38-0), 145 pounds, senior
Lena Johannson is undefeated this season and will face off against Cleburne County’s Avalena Williamson (33-0), also a seventh grader, in Saturday’s finals.
Saturday’s Championship Matches
Wrestling continues Saturday at 9 a.m. with consolation placement matches, followed by finals for all boys’ and girls’ divisions at noon. Matches will be live-streamed via the NFHS Network on its subscription-based platform.
