Decatur Heritage Defense Powers Eagles Past Abbeville 65-34 to Advance to Class 2A Girls Finals
Class 2A Girls’ Semifinals
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Decatur Heritage girls’ basketball head coach Johnny Jones believes championships are earned with defense.
“Offense alone won’t win championships,” Jones explained. “Defense is what makes the difference. Many players don’t want to focus on defense, but we’ll guard you and play physical.”
Jones’ philosophy was on full display Monday afternoon as the Eagles (28-7) dominated Abbeville (24-2), handing them just their second loss of the season. Decatur Heritage forced 22 turnovers, tallied 14 steals, and outrebounded Abbeville 44-37 to secure a commanding 65-34 victory. The win propelled the Eagles into Friday’s Class 2A state championship game at BJCC Legacy Arena, scheduled for 9 a.m.

Veteran Abbeville coach Darrell Brooks, who has accumulated a remarkable 454-140 career record across 23 years at his alma mater, acknowledged the physicality brought by Decatur Heritage.
“My young ladies played with incredible heart and hustle,” Brooks stated. “We faced a tough, scrappy team and give them credit for their effort. While we didn’t achieve all our goals, we are proud of this season’s accomplishments.”
With the win, Decatur Heritage awaits the outcome of Monday night’s semifinal between Pisgah and Highland Home to determine their opponent in Friday’s championship showdown.
