Providence Christian Edges Decatur Heritage 57-56 in Class 2A Boys Semifinal Thriller
CLASS 2A BOYS’ SEMIFINALS
BIRMINGHAM, AL – A poised Providence Christian defense proved pivotal in a nail-biting 57-56 victory over Decatur Heritage in the AHSAA Class 2A boys’ semifinals Monday night at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena. The Eagles from Dothan preserved their season with crucial defensive stands, earning a spot in Friday’s state championship game.
Providence Christian (29-2), guided by coach Mark Wright, secured the win in dramatic fashion during the final 18 seconds. Senior Pearce Boone delivered the deciding basket in the paint, putting PCA ahead. Decatur Heritage (21-9), coached by Jason Marshall, had multiple opportunities inside to reclaim the lead, but Providence Christian’s defense, capped by a critical block at the buzzer, held strong.
Despite the loss, Decatur Heritage dominated inside, scoring 30 points in the paint and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds, contributing to a total of 38 boards. Providence Christian countered with 13 steals and forced 15 turnovers, which helped overcome their rebounding deficit (27 total).
“We knew it was going to be a tough battle,” remarked Wright. “We just focused on staying the course, particularly with our 3-point defense, and tried to run them off the line in the second half.”
Decatur Heritage carried a 25-21 halftime lead, but Providence Christian surged back in the third quarter, outscoring their opponent 20-9. Decatur attempted a comeback in the fourth with a strong 22-16 rally, including nine 3-pointers on the night, but couldn’t connect on the final shot to steal the win.
Logan Hagler led Providence with 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Pearce Boone added 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals, while Cas Boone also chipped in 13 points.
Decatur Heritage was paced by Haden Page, who scored 26 points on 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Karter Jeffries contributed nine points, while Brady Wilson recorded six points, six assists, and led the team with 10 rebounds.
Coach Jason Marshall acknowledged the challenge posed by Providence Christian. “Our team worked extremely hard, and the defense played well,” he stated. “We just came up short in the end. Their pressing defenses disrupted our rhythm, but Haden’s shooting kept us within reach.”
With the win, Providence Christian advances to the Class 2A state finals, scheduled for Friday morning at 10:45 a.m. at Legacy Arena. They will face the winner of the Tuscaloosa Academy-Section matchup, held Monday evening.
