BIRMINGHAM – The Chelsea Lady Hornets made a statement in the Class 6A state semifinals on Wednesday at the BJCC Legacy Arena, using relentless defense to take down the Mountain Brook Spartans 56-28. The Hornets’ win secured their place in Saturday’s championship game against top-ranked Park Crossing (33-1), who ended Hazel Green’s streak of seven straight titles earlier in the day.
Hornets Defense Leads the Way
Chelsea’s suffocating defense held Mountain Brook to just six points in the first half and forced 19 turnovers throughout the game. The Hornets’ press limited head coach Sara Price’s Spartans to only 13 shots in the first half.
“It was one of our best defensive performances,” Chelsea coach Jason Harlow said. “We’ve prided ourselves on defense all year. It’s who we are.”
The Hornets jumped to an early 15-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, holding a 23-6 advantage at the half. Chelsea disrupted Mountain Brook’s offense while simultaneously showcasing its own teamwork and offensive cohesion. The team registered 17 assists on 21 made field goals, an impressive 81% assist rate.
“Our team is very unselfish,” remarked senior guard Olivia Pryor, who finished with 14 points and seven assists. “No one cares about individual stats—we just want to win.”
Star Performances
Junior Caroline Brown led all scorers with 18 points, adding three assists and contributing to the Hornets’ strong start. Meanwhile, senior Haley Trotter stood out in every aspect of the game, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and two assists. Trotter set the tone early by scoring seven points in the first two minutes, including a three-pointer in transition.
“I knew if I could get us started strong, it would pump everyone up,” Trotter said of her early barrage.
For Mountain Brook (26-7), sophomore Maddie Walter led with 12 points and 10 rebounds, adding a double-double to her standout performance. Senior Libby Geisler, the Spartans’ only senior and a Spring Hill College signee, contributed six points in her final game.

Coaches Reflect on the Game
Chelsea has never won an AHSAA girls’ state basketball title, but Coach Harlow is proud of his team’s development throughout the season.
“We’re playing our best basketball at the right time,” Harlow said. “It’s amazing to reach the point where we’re competing for a state championship.”
Mountain Brook Coach Sara Price acknowledged Chelsea’s strong performance but focused on her own team’s effort.
“I’m incredibly proud of our team and the hard work they’ve put in all season,” Price said. “The support for our program has been incredible.”
