Oak Mountain Boys Advance to 7A State Title Game Ridding 49 Game Win Streak

HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Oak Mountain Eagles secured their spot in the Class 7A state finals after narrowly defeating the Grissom Tigers 2-1 in the semifinals at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Park. Under the leadership of Coach David Di Piazzo, the Eagles extended their remarkable unbeaten run to 49 consecutive matches, dating back to 2023.

Now boasting a 30-0 record this season, Oak Mountain has also gone 60 matches without a loss, including just one draw against an out-of-state opponent in 2024. The Eagles will now face Montgomery Academy (18-5-2) in the championship match, set for Saturday at 9 a.m. Montgomery Academy earned their spot with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Fairhope, which was decided by penalty kicks after two overtime periods.

Eagles Secure Early Lead Against Grissom

Oak Mountain took charge early, with senior forward Sam Collins scoring the team’s first goal at the 23:49 mark of the first half. Just 31 seconds into the second half, senior midfielder Roy Soldevilla added a second goal, giving the Eagles a strong 2-0 advantage. Despite a determined effort from Grissom, including a goal by sophomore Nate Spellman at 63:10, the Tigers were unable to equalize.

The Eagles’ defense remained steadfast, limiting Grissom to only three shots on goal throughout the match. Oak Mountain keeper Owen Wells recorded two saves, while Grissom’s Jackson Bishop tallied six.

Championship Match Awaits

With their defense and offense in top form, Oak Mountain will now look to capture another 7A state title. Standing in their way is Montgomery Academy, a team known for their resilience, as demonstrated by their dramatic semifinal victory.

The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will look to run their win streak to 50 games and bring another blue map back to north Shelby County.
