Arab Slips Past Albertville 18-14 in Season Opener

ARAB, AL – The Arab Arabian Knights narrowly defeated the visiting Albertville Aggies 18-14 in a thrilling season opener on Thursday night at the Arab City Schools Sportsplex. In a game marked by key defensive stands and late-game drama, the Knights scored the decisive touchdown with just 90 seconds remaining claim their 6th consecutive victory over their cross-county rivals. 

The game began as a defensive battle, with both teams held scoreless in the first quarter. Strong defensive play from the Aggies forced Arab into negative yardage on their opening drive. Albertville’s first possession was similarly stalled by penalties, leading to a 0-0 tie heading into the second quarter.

Arab broke the deadlock on their second possession of the second period when senior running back Luke Hudson rushed for an eight-yard touchdown. A missed extra point left the Knights with a 6-0 lead.

Albertville’s offense found its rhythm on the following drive. Quarterback CJ Zuniga connected with receiver Brandt Sweatt for a 13-yard gain, and Sweatt followed up with a 12-yard run. However, the promising drive was cut short when a fumble was recovered by the Arab defense, preserving the Knights’ 6-0 lead at halftime.

The Aggies received the ball to start the second half and quickly seized the momentum. Zuniga hit Jacobbi Watson for a 25-yard gain on the first play. Later in the drive, facing a fourth-and-eight, Albertville benefited from a roughing the passer penalty that gave them a first down inside the ten-yard line. Two plays later, Sweatt ran for a two-yard touchdown. Phillip Jahn’s successful PAT gave Albertville its first lead, 7-6.

The lead was short-lived. On the ensuing kickoff, Arab’s Dylan Kirkland returned it 100 yards for a touchdown, putting the Knights back on top 12-7 after another missed PAT.

In the final quarter, Albertville mounted another impressive scoring drive. A strong running game from Zuniga, Sweatt, and Eguensley Cerant moved the ball to the Arab 22-yard line. Facing another fourth down, Zuniga found Sweatt for a 22-yard touchdown pass, and the Aggies reclaimed the lead, 14-12.

With six minutes left, the Aggie defense forced an Arab punt. Albertville’s offense managed the clock but faced a critical fourth down with two minutes remaining. A failed fake punt attempt turned the ball over to the Knights.

Arab capitalized immediately. A facemask penalty moved the ball into the red zone, and two plays later, Jon Loden scored on a ten-yard run with 1:30 left on the clock. The touchdown gave Arab an 18-14 lead that would hold until the final whistle. Albertville’s last-chance effort ended with a sack on Zuniga as time expired.

Hudson led the Arabian Knight rushing attack with 116 yards on the ground and a score. Loden added 31 yards and the game-winning score.

For the visitors, Zuniga finished 8-for-18 with 123 passing yards and a touchdown, adding 30 yards on the ground. Sweatt was a dual threat, recording three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown while also scoring a rushing touchdown.

For Arab, Hudson led the ground attack with 116 rushing yards and a touchdown. Loden added 31 yards and the game-winning score.

Up next, the Knights will look to remain unbeaten with a road trip to Centre to take on Class 4A power Cherokee County (0-1). The Aggies will welcome rival Boaz (1-0) to Vernon Wells Stadium in their home opener.
