Class 6A No. 3 Saraland Downs 4A Power Jackson 17-6 in Road Victory
JACKSON, AL – The third-ranked Class 6A Saraland Spartans delivered a statement victory Friday night, defeating the top-ranked Class 4A Jackson Aggies 17-6 at John D. Simpson Stadium. The road triumph snapped Jackson’s impressive 14-game winning streak that dated back to last season’s opener against Saraland.
First Quarter Defensive Battle Sets Stage
Both high school football powerhouses struggled offensively in a scoreless opening quarter, with defenses controlling the tempo in front of a capacity crowd at Simpson Stadium.
Jackson Strikes First in Second Quarter
The Aggies broke through early in the second quarter behind explosive special teams play. Senior Keegan Chapman, a North Carolina commit, electrified the home crowd with a 46-yard punt return to the Saraland 34-yard line.
Jackson needed just three plays to capitalize on the field position. South Carolina quarterback commit Landon Duckworth found receiver Jamarrion Gordon, another North Carolina commit, for a spectacular 28-yard touchdown pass. Gordon soared above defenders to secure the scoring strike, though Saraland’s Lawardrick Jones blocked the extra point attempt to keep the score at 6-0.
Saraland Responds with Clutch Drive
The Spartans answered immediately with their most impressive drive of the night. Quarterback Jamison Roberts, making his first start, completed five of six passes on the scoring march. The drive’s highlight came on fourth-and-20 from the Jackson 30, when Roberts connected with AJ Martin for a crucial conversion and touchdown.
Garrison Little’s extra point gave Saraland a 7-6 advantage with 4:32 remaining in the first half – a lead they would never relinquish.
Weather and Turnovers Define Second Half
Heavy rain at halftime transformed field conditions and momentum. The Saraland Spartans dominated the second half, forcing five Jackson turnovers – four fumble recoveries and one interception.
Defensive standouts Brayden Clifton and LJ Nobles each recorded two fumble recoveries, helping Saraland control possession and field position throughout the final two quarters.
Quarterback Analysis
Roberts proved steady in his debut as Saraland’s starting quarterback, completing 17 of 27 passes for 203 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception.
Jackson’s Duckworth finished 14-of-21 for 185 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception in the loss.
Missing Star Impact
The Jackson Aggies played without star running back EJ Crowell, an Alabama commit serving a one-game suspension for violating state athletic regulations. Despite possessing explosive offensive talent, the Aggies couldn’t overcome the turnover differential against a determined Saraland defense.
Looking Ahead
Saraland continues its challenging schedule next Friday, traveling to face Blount in the Class 6A Region 1 opener. Jackson will look to bounce back at home against visiting Demopolis.
The victory establishes Saraland as a legitimate Class 6A championship contender while handing Jackson its first loss since the 2023 season opener between these same programs.
