Davis Powers Leeds Past Mortimer Jordan 45-28
LEEDS, AL – The No. 9 ranked Leeds Green Wave secured a decisive 45-28 victory over Mortimer Jordan, establishing an early lead and never looking back.
The action started quickly when Leeds’ running back, Jacarrious Davis, broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run. A subsequent 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Lollar to Taylon Gaiter extended the Green Wave’s lead to 14-0 in the first quarter.
Mortimer Jordan answered with a 72-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Rice to Jacob Cawley, cutting the deficit to 14-7. However, Davis found the end zone again with an 11-yard run. Cawley immediately responded for Mortimer Jordan, returning the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. Davis capped the first-half scoring with a 2-yard run, his third touchdown of the night, giving Leeds a 28-14 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Leeds continued to build its lead with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Lollar to Gaiter, a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Lollar, and a 29-yard field goal from Tyler Vandiver. Mortimer Jordan’s Blaze Neely connected with Tanner Rice for two second-half touchdowns of 10 and 8 yards.
Jacarrious Davis was the workhorse for Leeds, finishing with 170 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. Lollar completed 11 of his 13 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Taylon Gaiter was a dual-threat, rushing for 75 yards on seven carries and catching four passes for 131 yards and two scores.
For Mortimer Jordan, Jacob Cawley had an impressive night with six receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown, in addition to his 88-yard kickoff return for a score.
Next week, Leeds (1-0) will travel to Irondale to take on the Shades Valley Mounties(1-0), while Mortimer Jordan (0-1) welcomes the Cullman Bearcats (0-1) to Jimmie Trotter Stadium.
