No. 6 Fairview Defeats Springville 40-23 in Home Opener
FAIRVIEW, AL – The sixth-ranked Fairview Aggies improved to 2-0 on the season with a commanding 40-23 victory over the Springville Tigers at Dafford Smith Stadium Friday night. Head coach George Redding Jr.’s squad overcame an early deficit to dominate the game’s middle quarters, outscoring Springville 33-9 after falling behind 14-7.
First Quarter Battle Sets Stage for Aggie Surge
Springville struck first with a 51-yard touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 advantage. The Aggies answered quickly when Jake Harper’s explosive run set up a 3-yard scoring strike from Kolt Redding to Jace Stevens on fourth down, evening the score at 7-7.
Rex Chandler gave Fairview its first lead with a 9-yard touchdown run, putting the Aggies ahead 14-7. The Tigers responded with their own scoring drive to knot the game at 14-14 as the opening quarter concluded.
Aggies Control Second Quarter with 19 Unanswered Points
The Class 5A Aggies seized control in the second quarter, scoring three consecutive touchdowns to build a decisive 33-14 halftime lead. The surge began when Avery Latham recovered a Springville fumble, leading to Harper’s 7-yard touchdown run.
Fairview’s defense and special teams created additional opportunities. After recovering a short kickoff, the Aggies capitalized when Redding scored from one yard out with four minutes remaining in the half. Harper capped the scoring barrage with a 6-yard touchdown run in the final 15 seconds, sending Fairview into the locker room with a 19-point advantage.
Second Half Maintains Aggie Advantage
Chandler extended Fairview’s lead to 40-14 with his second rushing touchdown of the night, a score that came with approximately four minutes left in the third quarter. Despite Springville’s late efforts, including a safety and a touchdown that cut the deficit to 17 points, the Tigers couldn’t mount a complete comeback.
Harper Powers Ground Game with Career Performance
Junior running back Jake Harper delivered a standout performance, rushing for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. His powerful running attack consistently moved the chains and controlled field position throughout the contest.
Looking Ahead: Region Battles Await
The 2-0 Fairview Aggies face their biggest test of the young season next Friday with a road trip to West Point in a crucial region matchup. Meanwhile, the winless Springville Tigers (0-2) will travel to face eighth-ranked Leeds (2-0) as they search for their first victory of the season.
