Oak Mountain Edges Pelham 30-29 For Thrilling, Last-Second Victory
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Oak Mountain Eagles pulled off a dramatic comeback victory against the Pelham Panthers in a heart-stopping finish Friday night, winning 30-29 on the final play of the North Shelby showdown.
With the win, Oak Mountain starts off the season at 2-0 for the second consecutive season. Pelham head coach Ross Newton is still searching for his first win as the Panthers slip to 0-2.
Game-Winning Drive Caps Epic Finish
With time running out, Eagles quarterback Charlie Vacarella launched a 46-yard touchdown strike to receiver Kolby King to knot the score at 29-29. Kicker Josh Renfroe converted the crucial extra point despite an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that pushed the attempt back 15 yards, securing the victory for Oak Mountain (2-0).
The Panthers had seized a 29-23 advantage with just 47 seconds remaining when quarterback Dylan Smith connected with Jordan Winston for the go-ahead touchdown pass.
Standout Performances Drive High-Scoring Affair
Pelham’s Marcus Arnold delivered a spectacular all-around performance, hauling in 11 receptions for 172 yards and an 11-yard touchdown. Arnold also provided fireworks on special teams with a 70-yard punt return for six points.
Smith orchestrated the Panthers’ aerial attack, completing 13 of 25 passes for 210 yards and two touchdown strikes of 11 and 34 yards. The dual-threat quarterback also punched in a 1-yard rushing touchdown.
For Oak Mountain, Vacarella efficiently managed the offense with a 16-of-24 passing performance for 228 yards and touchdown passes of 9 and 46 yards. Running back Marty Myricks provided balance on the ground, carrying the ball 22 times for 113 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Region Play Begins Next Week
Pelham (0-2) will travel to face Chelsea in their Class 6A, Region 3 opener, marking the beginning of region competition for both teams. Oak Mountain heads to Prattville for their Class 7A, Region 3 opener as they look to maintain their perfect start to the season.
