Thompson Falls to Georgia Powerhouse Grayson 24-23 in Overtime Thriller for Second Consecutive Year

LOGANVILLE, GA – For the second straight season, Georgia powerhouse Grayson edged Thompson in a dramatic overtime contest, claiming a 24-23 victory.

The clash featured two nationally-ranked programs, with Class 7A top-ranked Thompson sitting at No. 12 nationally according to MaxPreps, while Grayson holds the No. 5 spot in national rankings.

First Half Struggles Lead to Low-Scoring Battle

Warriors quarterback Seaborn struggled early, throwing three interceptions in the opening half as both defensive units dominated. The teams entered halftime deadlocked at 3-3.

Second Half Surge Nearly Lifts Thompson

Seaborn bounced back dramatically in the second half, connecting on two crucial touchdown passes. He found Trey Knight for a 5-yard score before hitting Dedrick Kimbrough on a 49-yard strike that gave Thompson a 17-10 advantage with 2:09 remaining.

Earlier in the half, Grayson quarterback Deuce Smith had orchestrated an impressive 99-yard scoring drive to knot the game at 10-10.

Grayson Forces Overtime with Late-Game Heroics

Smith answered Thompson’s go-ahead score with a clutch 71-yard drive in the final minutes. Two costly Thompson penalties – a personal foul early in the drive and pass interference in the red zone – aided Grayson’s march downfield. Smith scrambled away from pressure and located Saif bin Wahad behind the Warriors defense for a 27-yard touchdown pass, sending the game to overtime.

Overtime Drama Decides Rematch

Grayson won the coin toss and scored first in the extra period. After a pass interference penalty moved the ball to Thompson’s 7-yard line, Ashton Turner punched in his second touchdown of the night, putting the Rams ahead 24-17.

Thompson responded immediately as Seaborn connected with Kimbrough on a 15-yard touchdown pass on their first overtime play. However, the Warriors’ decision to attempt a two-point conversion for the victory backfired when Seaborn’s pass fell incomplete, securing Grayson’s narrow victory.

Statistical Breakdown

Seaborn finished with impressive passing numbers despite the early struggles, completing 38 of 56 attempts for 362 yards. His three interceptions came entirely in the first half, while all three touchdown passes occurred after the break.

Darion Moseley led Thompson’s receiving corps with 10 catches for 89 yards. Kimbrough contributed five receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Looking Ahead

The defending Class 7A champion Warriors will seek to rebound when they open region play against Tuscaloosa County on September 5th in Alabaster.
