Second Ranked Clay-Chalkville Dominates Pell City in 52-9 in Region Clash
CLAY, AL – The Clay-Chalkville Cougars, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, extended their undefeated streak with a commanding 52-9 victory over the Pell City Panthers in a key regional matchup Friday night. The win improves the Cougars’ record to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in Class 6A, Region 6 play.
The high-powered Clay-Chalkville offense started fast. Less than a minute into the contest, Cougars quarterback Aaron Frye connected with Corey Barber for a 49-yard touchdown pass, setting the tone for the evening. Frye would later add two rushing touchdowns to his impressive performance.
Pell City (2-1, 0-1) answered quickly when DJ Wade returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score. However, that would be the Panthers’ only trip to the endzone. The Cougars’ defense stifled the Pell City offense all night, holding them to just 141 total yards, including only 44 yards on the ground.
Clay-Chalkville’s ground game was a significant factor in the victory, with Joshua Woods leading the charge. Woods ran for 104 yards on 17 carries, finding the endzone for a touchdown. The special teams also contributed to the scoreboard when Cayden Farris returned a punt 90 yards for another touchdown.
The Cougars continued to build their lead throughout the game. Junior running back Aaron Robinson added a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. In the fourth, sophomore quarterback Cornelius Ethridge entered the game and immediately made an impact, scoring on a 49-yard touchdown run on his first play.
With the win, head coach Stuart Floyd’s Cougars have now outscored their opponents by a combined total of 158-24 through three games, showcasing their offensive dominance and stingy defense.
Next week, Clay-Chalkville travels to Irondale to face the Shades Valley Mounties (1-2), while Pell City will welcome the eight ranked Mountain Brook Spartans (2-1) to Pete Rich – Alumni Stadium.
